Harley’s® 1250 Revolution™ Max engine has been a hot topic for 2021, first being debuted on Pan America™. Looking at the specifications, it's hard not to be impressed with what Harley® has engineered. With so many neat features and technical components of the all-new 1250 Revolution™ Max engine, I wanted to hone in and take a more in-depth look into what makes this engine so exciting!
Hybrid Engine Chassis
During the Pan American™ launch earlier this year, Harley® briefly mentioned the Stressed-Engine Hybrid Chassis. For those of you that don’t know what this means, essentially the 1250 Revolution™ Max engine is integrated within the bike as the central member of the frame. Chief Engineer, Alex Bozmoski explains further, “We're really more into the functionality. What you see is actually what works. And that's why we believe that the engine should be out front and proud. The concept here was to design the engine such that it was stiff enough to be the central member of the frame”. Key benefits for designing the engine to be an integral part of the bike includes a reduction of weight and improved handling performance.
Because the 1250 Revolution™ Max engine features hydraulic lash adjusters, it allows for the valve train to be maintenance free. To my surprise, Harley® barely touched on this rather important feature during the press release, as it offers a huge advantage over other manufacturers! Services on a valve train are costly and timely. It also reduces valve train noise, which is usually prevalent on cold starts. Hopefully Harley® starts pushing this detail about the engine a little more, as it’s something to be proud of and a key selling point.
Computer Control Valve Timing
The independent computer controlled valve timing on the intake and exhaust cam are optimised for top efficiency for the front and rear cylinders. Compared to an engine with fixed valve timing, the computer controlled valve timing broadens the powerband and improves torque management efficiency. This allows the 1250 Revolution™ Max engine to accelerate with thrilling low-end torque, whilst also offering aggressive top end torque in higher RPM’s. Essentially, its the perfect adventure riding engine that can be adapt to any and all riding situations!
It's clear that the Revolution™ Max is an absolute gem of an engine. From engineering one of the most advanced Electric Motorcycles on the market, to releasing a fully fleshed out Adventure Bike, Harley® is really turning a new chapter in their historic motorcycle evolution.
